Supreme Flops

The power of the logo only goes so far when it comes to Supreme accessories

Supreme Clear Inflatable Chair

Supreme is known to have their products resell for insane amounts of money after selling out. Some of the most coveted Supreme items include box logo sweatshirts and tees, The North Face x Supreme jackets, shoulder bags, and headbands. People will pay ridiculous amounts of money to get their hands on these precious grails. Box logo hoodies and crewnecks retailing for around $180 can resell at around $1,000, and shoulder bags sold at $50 can go for as much as $300. However, this is not the case for all merchandise.

On a weekly basis, resellers can usually make anywhere between $10-$150 off a popular item, but there are always exceptions. On some occasions, items barely sell out after staying in stock for days after the release and go for less than retail on the aftermarket. This season, there are a few items that come to mind when I think about flops for both Supreme and resellers. One particular product from the Fall/Winter 18 Season that was never able to gain hype was the Supreme step ladder.

Typically, hypebeasts jump all over crazy Supreme accessories, but a stepladder isn’t really that exciting. The accessory took a few hours to sell out, which is never a good sign for resale prices. Along with that, the ladder retailed for $288, three times the price of an unbranded version. It isn’t even something you can easily display in your house or collection, making it hard to show the piece off. If a Supreme lover actually needed a stepladder, they could get the exact same version without the white lettering for around $100. Typically, hypebeasts are not the type to think logically when it comes to purchases; however, sometimes they draw the line at what they are willing to drop hundreds on. The Supreme Lucano step ladder currently goes for around $50 below retail on StockX.

A second flop from this season was the set of Supreme Lucetta bike lights, which released in black and red colorways. Approximately the size of a quarter, these lights retailed for $36. Before the drop, I had been planning on purchasing the lights because I love biking and thought the black and white lights would be the perfect accessories for my black and white bike. I figured they would only set me back a $20-$30, but unfortunately, with shipping they would have cost almost $50. The large price tag simply did not match the size, quality, or type of item. The lights stayed in stock for almost a week, resulting in resale prices barely 2/3 of what the retail price was. Once again, it comes down to how easily you can flex the accessory, and in this case, you would hardly notice them on a bike.

Lastly, the Supreme inflatable chair from last week’s drop still has not sold out. Those hoping to resell were met with much disappointment, considering there is no aftermarket for a $300 chair that you can still purchase from Supreme. Those three Benjamins will only get you an inflatable piece of plastic, either clear or amber colored, with a box logo inside the head of the chair. Personally I think that it would be awesome to have in a bedroom, but that hefty price is too ridiculous, even for hypebeasts. If someone is paying a lot of money for a brand name, they atleast want something of quality to show for it, and plastic chair just doesn’t make the cut. The clear version currently is selling around $200, while the amber colored one is going for $250. Next time you’re about to click the “Process Payment” button for a ridiculous accessory, just think of the demand, how easy the product is to show off, and wonder: who is actually going to be sitting in an inflatable plastic chair?
